Call to ex-dancers

ARE YOU UP FOR A DANCE?

Callout to all ex-hungarian dancers in Sydney and surrounds.

As you may have heard, Kengugro is turning 40 this year and we are holding an anniversary celebration on Sunday 25 October at the Polish Club in Ashfield. We are planning to perform a few items in costume and would like to invite you to join us for a couple of numbers. The two dances on offer are the zsámboki karikázó and a mezöségi páros.

KARIKÁZÓ
Some of you may remember the karikázó as we dug it out of the archives from the mid 80s with the catch phrase “te vagy a gunár!”. You may well have performed it with Kodaly, Palotás or Kengugró.

Here is the original:

Recently we have been re-working the piece, shortening and simplifying, and are ready to teach it to you ;)

How will this work?

If you are able to come along on Wednesday evenings to rehearsal in Kingsgrove that would be ideal as we will be working on it every week until the main event. If not, we can provide you with learning material which you can work on at home. Re-learn the songs and walk through the choreography by following our video. We would ask that you at least attend a final dress rehearsal on the weekend before the gala on Sunday 18 October, location and exact time to come (will be afternoon). This final dress rehearsal is where we will also supply you with your costume.

MEZÖSÉGI
The other dance will be an improvised mezöségi couple dance. Most people can fudge their way through this without too much hassle. However if you need a refresher, we will be teaching this on Wednesday evenings until the gala. The age old problem is that there are not enough men, but there is no issue with women dancing together, just need to figure out who will be the leader and the follower. Ladies, if you are performing the karikazo, you will just wear the same costume for both. Men, black pants, white shirt, black shoes and hat should do the trick. As per the karikázó, we will be doing a final dress rehearsal on the weekend before the gala on Sunday 18 October, location and exact time to come (will be afternoon) - hopefully you can make it.
